Schools You've Gotta Check Out

New Mexico, Where the Green Chile is Hot!

If you follow men's college soccer, you know that the University of New Mexico is the talk of the town. Here's a team that basically came out of nowhere. A few years ago this was a team that was lucky to beat East Tumbleweed State College. In the last four years, however, Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein and his Assistant Jamie Clark have turned the Lobos into a national contender.

Yeah, they didn't win the College Cup, and they could probably work a little on their penalty kicks, but the Lobos are a success story based on homegrown talent. The team was built with a core group of local players--many of whom played on the same club--and a supporting cast that's drawn from around the country. It's a great lesson to those of you who want to play with your high school and club buddies--it can be done and with great success.

Lobo fans rewarded this success with record-breaking attendance during the post-season--over 5,000 fans per game. Talk about a great playing environment! After the Golden Goal quarterfinal win, the fans stormed the field, tore down the goal and marched it off to nearby Frontier Restaurant, where they celebrated with the world's best breakfast burritos.
